Why Every Vanlifer Should Keep a Travel Diary (and How to Make It a Habit)

After a few months on the road, the days start to blur. Was that perfect beach spot in Portugal or Spain? What was the name of the café where the owner gave you free cake? Your camera roll is full, but the stories are slowly disappearing. That’s why keeping a travel diary is one of the best habits a vanlifer can have.

Why keep a vanlife diary?

  • Remember the details: names, places, people and the little moments that never make it into a photo.
  • Find great spots again, and remember which ones to skip next time.
  • Share honest tips with friends and fellow travelers.
  • See your journey grow: the nights, the kilometres and the countries add up, and that’s surprisingly motivating.
  • Keep something real: years from now, a diary or a printed photo book is worth far more than ten thousand unsorted photos.

What to write down each night

You don’t need to write a novel. A few things are enough:

  • Where you slept: the name of the place and where it is
  • One photo, ideally the view when you wake up
  • A quick rating: quiet? safe? any facilities?
  • The best moment of the day
  • People you met along the way
  • Costs, if you like to keep track

Five ways to make it a habit

  1. Do it in the morning. The memory is fresh, the coffee is hot and the view is right in front of you.
  2. Keep it short. Three lines every day beat a long entry once a month.
  3. Tie it to a ritual, like your first coffee or before you start the engine.
  4. Photo first, words second. A picture makes it easy to start writing.
  5. Don’t aim for perfect. Nobody grades your diary. Honest beats beautiful.

Notebook, notes app or a dedicated app?

  • A paper notebook feels lovely and never runs out of battery, but it has no maps or photos and is easy to lose.
  • Notes and the camera roll are always with you, but everything ends up scattered across apps.
  • A dedicated travel diary app keeps location, photos, notes and a map of your route together in one place.

How Vanvoy makes it effortless

We’re building Vanvoy to turn this habit into something that takes seconds. Every morning a gentle notification asks where you slept. Snap a photo, give the spot a rating, add a few lines and you’re done. Night by night your diary grows into a map and a story of your journey.

You decide who sees each night: everyone, only friends or just you. And when the trip is over, you can turn it into a printed photo book with your photos, notes and route.
